Our attitudes towards climate change are primarily the result of where we fall on the political spectrum\, and our corresponding aversion to what we perceive to be the only solution: allowing the government to destroy the economy\, impose unfair regulations\, and rob us of our personal liberties. \nIs there solid evidence that climate is changing and humans are responsible? Are there solutions that are economically viable and appealing across the political spectrum? And why would any of us even care? Join Katharine Hayhoe as she untangles the complex science behind global warming and highlights the key role our values can play in shaping our conversations on this crucial topic. \n\n\nThis event is hosted by the Church of Ireland & Methodist Chaplaincy at Queen’s in partnership with Queen’s Religious Studies Research Forum. \nSince1957\, the Annual Theological Lectures at Queen’s have sought to foster dialogue between theology and cutting edge issues in the public square. DESCRIPTION:On 11 March 2020\, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus a global pandemic. Since its outbreak in January in Wuhan\, China\, the world has increasingly been gripped by fear as the virus spreads. Normal life and societies in many places have been disrupted. Businesses\, schools\, and industries have been affected. Countries are on lock down and large populations are under quarantine in an effort to contain the spread of this virus. This is a global challenge. We express deep concern and sympathy for all who are affected\, especially to those in parts of the world where this challenge is being most acutely felt. We express our deep regret at the fatalities that have occurred. \nThe current outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and its quick spread has a lot to do with how humanity (mis-)manages and (mis-)uses the environment. It also has some very practical implications for creation care work around the globe – both on the advocacy and the implementation level. \nThe webinar wrestles with three key questions: 1. Stepping back – What can we learn about humanity\, our societies\, and our planet from this crisis? 2. Stepping out – In which way does the current COVID-19 crisis provide a historic chance to rethink and redo the “People and Planet partnership”? 3. Stepping up – How can people of faith be inspiring voices of hope and helpful hands of good these days\, spreading the positive virus of transformation globally? \nAmid global crisis and suffering\, we want to think about some of the ways to find hope for humanity and the planet. As heat accumulates in the climate system\, it drives long-term increases in temperature and sea level\, and super-charges hurricanes\, heatwaves\, and heavy precipitation events. These changes in turn exacerbate poverty\, hunger\, disease\, refugee crises\, and more. Today\, the choice is stark: can we do what it takes to avoid widespread dangerous change? Or will we remain mired in inaction until the full cost of this unprecedented experiment we’re conducting with our planet falls due?

DESCRIPTION:As part of Earth Month 2020\, Texas Tech’s Katharine Hayhoe will deliver the 2020 Charles David Keeling Lecture online\, hosted by the University of Illinois. \nGravity doesn’t care what we believe; if we step off a cliff\, we’re going down. And a thermometer doesn’t give us a different answer\, depending on how we vote. Yet today\, the best predictor of whether we agree that climate is changing and humans are responsible isn’t our level of education or our degree of scientific literacy: It’s simply where we fall on the political spectrum. How can good science inform sound decision-making in a world permeated by the false notion\, as Isaac Asimov said\, that ‘democracy means that my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge’? The answer lies not in the physical sciences\, but in the social science of how we as humans interact with information. By understanding the true roots of denial\, it can be possible to constructively engage with deliberate attempts to politicize the science and even identify unexpected areas of common ground on which to build bridges rather than deepen existing trenches. \n
