SUMMARY:Rice University Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, the U.S. saw intense forest fires and a record number of hurricanes and other extreme weather events as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. All have highlighted the fracture lines that can sometimes exist between science experts and science skeptics. 2020 demonstrated how the lack of collaboration and trust in both climate and public health science has led to worse societal outcomes — indicating that more effective science communication and communicators are needed. In this event\, Katharine Hayhoe\, co-director of the Climate Center at Texas Tech University\, will discuss her work as an atmospheric scientist and a renowned science communicator who works to bridge cultural and political divides with regard to climate science. \nThis event is part of the Civic Scientist Lecture Series\, sponsored by the Baker Institute Science and Technology Policy Program with generous support from Benjamin and Winifer Cheng. Additional support is provided by Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering and Wiess School of Natural Sciences and grants from the Kavli Foundation and the National Science Foundation (Grant No. 2042854). Follow @stpolicy on Twitter\, and join the conversation with #BakerScience. \nAGENDA\n1:00 p.m. — Welcome remarks\n1:10 p.m. — Presentation \nREGISTRATION\nThis webinar is free\, but registration is required. SUMMARY:What Climate Change and COVID Have in Common
DESCRIPTION:Even as Covid-19 swept across the world\, the threat of climate change loomed right behind it as wildfires\, heatwaves and global temperatures set new records this past year. Short-term drops in air pollution and carbon emissions and increases in clean energy provided a hopeful glimpse of how the world could be if it pursued a green recovery. However\, all too soon actions as simple as wearing masks and respecting quarantines fell prey to the same political polarisation and misinformation campaigns in the U.S. that had thwarted climate action for years. What can we learn from how both coronavirus and climate change affect us\, and how we respond to them? Join Katharine Hayhoe for a discussion that explores both the physical science and the psychology of how we understand the global challenges we face today.

SUMMARY:The Goodness of Creation and Human Responsibility Conference
DESCRIPTION:This is our Father’s world. He created it\, and it reflects the goodness and greatness of its Creator. But Scripture also shows us that this universe is a place where a cosmic conflict is playing out. When humanity was called to take part in this great drama\, we rebelled. Humanity joined the war against our Creator. Instead of acting as faithful stewards\, we squandered God’s gifts. Now Christ has reconciled us to God\, and the Church is called to minister in this sin-damaged world. \nThe goal of this conference is to show the integral link between creation and redemption\, to explore how evangelicals can recover important biblical themes concerning the goodness of creation\, to examine the place and responsibility of humans in creation\, and to present practical actions we should take now. As we explore these themes together\, we want to glorify Christ and advance his kingdom.
